Steamed veggie dumplings are my go-to when we’re out for Chinese food. A lot of places use egg in their dumpling wrapper, but we’re lucky to have at least two places around here that serve vegan ones! Instead of having to order out all the time, I really wanted to try my hand at homemade dumplings.
Of course… I searched EVERYWHERE for a wrapper without egg, but failed. Luckily for Pinterest, I found this egg-less wrapper recipe from Adventures In All Things Food. These are PERFECT. I didn’t even touch the recipe, so please use it when making these.
I’ll be honest… these babies are time consuming. If you are somewhere to be, I would pass. Or if you are freaking starving… definitely pass. Have all the time in the world to craft your meal? Perfect.
I used this bamboo steamer. I don’t regret this purchase – you can do so much with it! I highly recommend.
Anyways, onto the recipe.
The Recipe
Makes: about 20 dumplings, but depends on size
Steam time: 15 minutes
For the egg-less wonton wrappers:
Use this recipe and then set aside while you make filling. Or, if you find egg-free wrappers, power to ya!
For the filling:
- 1/2 cup shredded cabbage
- 1/4 cup shredded carrots
- 1/4 cup sliced bok choy
- 1 onion, diced
- 1/4 cup mushrooms, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tbs sesame oil
- 2 tbs soy sauce
- 1 tbs rice vinegar
- Salt and pepper, to taste
To make, prep all veggies and throw in a pan over medium heat. Add sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and seasoning. Cook over medium heat until veggies are wilted.
How to make:
- Once your veggies and wrappers are ready, add veggies to wrapper, seal up with your fingers, and add to a parchment paper-lined bamboo layer. You can fit about 8-10 dumplings on each layer (depending on size).
- To steam, here is a quick video. Basically, you fill a pan/wok with water on the stove and bring it to a boil. The trick is to make sure your steamer fits snug inside! You turn the heat down to medium and let your dumplings steam for about 15 minutes.
Phew… there are a lot of steps and moving parts to this recipe, but oh man. They are soooo worth it! Anyone else try their hand at homemade dumplings? Would love to hear your experiences. xx bianca
